Simon Carter — World Climbing: Images from the Edge
Winner: Best Book — Mountain Image
at the 2006 Banff Mountain Book Competition

Featuring images from locations as far apart as Thailand and Wales, World Climbing: Images from the Edge is a rich visual journey to some of the finest climbing areas the world has to offer. He describes the book’s genesis: “In 2000, after photographing climbing for several years in Australia, I started a new personal challenge to travel to some of the world’s great climbing areas and to capture both the places and the action on film. It turned into an on-going odyssey, sometimes planned, sometimes spontaneous. A chance meeting here, an invitation there, has guided my travels in most rewarding ways…. It is evident to me that climbers the world over have much in common. Though some prefer one style of climbing over another, they all revel in the fact that climbing in nature’s playground is a world apart from more conventional recreation. This is not simply a sport — it’s a way of life.”
An exhibition of Simon Carter’s work will be on display in the Max Bell lobby during the festival. Visit his website: Onsight Photography.
