Himalayan Cataract Project
Dr. Geoff Tabin’s interest in international medicine grew from his passion for climbing. He spent much of the 1970s pursuing difficult rock and ice routes, before graduating from Harvard Medicine in 1980. Forgoing plans to become an orthopedic surgeon, Tabin soon returned to the rock – a detour that led him to practice medicine in Zaire and ultimately Nepal, where he witnessed cataract surgery first-hand. It was an experience that changed his life, and his career. Now, Tabin runs the Himlayan Cataract Project, which operates in Nepal, Tibet, China, Bhutan, India, Sikkim, and Pakistan. Under Tabin’s direction, the program has restored sight to tens of thousands of people annually since 1994.
