August 16, 1999 Expedition plans underway! Mountain legends and leaders to converge in Banff for the Banff Mountain Summit 2000 Thirty of this centurys most celebrated mountaineers will meet in Banff in the year 2000 for the Banff Mountain Summit. The two-day Summit is part of the 25th anniversary celebrations of the Banff Mountain Film Festival and all thirty guests are memorable participants from past years of the Festival. The Summit is organized by The Banff Centre for Mountain Culture and will be presented by the Banff Springs Hotel on October 30 and 31, 2000. Tickets to the event are already selling fast. "The Summit will bring together an exceptional group of mountain leaders from around the world to discuss issues affecting the international mountain community," said Bernadette McDonald, Director of The Banff Centre for Mountain Culture. "This symposium will present a rare opportunity for them to gather in one room to reflect on the past and to share their visions for the future. Its also a unique opportunity for the audience to hear all of these people at one event." Sir Edmund Hillary, who made the first ascent of Mount Everest with Sherpa Tenzing Norgay in 1953, will give the opening address at the Summit. A number of presentations will follow, covering a variety of topics including rock and ice climbing, ethical adventure, the last frontiers, Himalayan climbing and mountaineering role models. Other confirmed guests to date are: Sir Christian Bonington, David Breashears, Kitty Calhoun, Riccardo Cassin, Greg Child, Yvon Chouinard, Peter Croft, Wade Davis, Kurt Diemberger, Catherine Destivelle, Mick Fowler, Will Gadd, Anderl Heckmair, Lynn Hill, Thomas F. Hornbein, Dr. Charles Houston, Leo Houlding, Silvo Karo, Guy Lacelle, Alex Lowe, Jeff Lowe, Reinhold Messner, Pat Morrow, Royal Robbins, Doug Scott, Ed Viesturs and Krzysztof Wieliecki. The Summit will kick off a week-long anniversary celebration that includes:
