Banff Photo Competition Celebrates Mountain Images

Alec Pytlowany, a Banff-based professional sports and landscape photographer, is the Grand Prize winner of the 1999 Banff Mountain Photography Competition hosted by The Banff Centre for Mountain Culture and sponsored by Cascade Plaza, Lowepro and Nikon Canada.

Elk Skull Under Ice, Pytlowany's winning entry, topped an impressive collection of more than 2,100 photographs submitted from 12 countries for this prestigious fourth annual competition. An international jury named four other winners in five categories. Another eight photographers received special mention.

The winning images will be unveiled in an exhibition at Banff's Cascade Plaza in November 1999 and will then be on display at The Banff Centre until the end of October 2000. The photographs will also be exhibited at select locations in Canada and abroad throughout the year.

"Mountains, and mountain images, can be profoundly moving and inspiring.
