Finalists Announced for 2002 Banff Mountain Book Festival

From the frozen wastes of the high Arctic to the war-torn valleys of the Karakoram mountains, the finalists in this year’s Banff Mountain Book Festival provide a window on the world’s most remote places and peoples. A pre-screening committee has selected 39 finalists from 128 entries entered in the 9th annual competition.

"The range of experiences represented in this year’s finalists is truly astounding," says Bernadette McDonald, vice-president, Mountain Culture, The Banff Centre. "These books allow readers to explore mountain cultures and to experience the extraordinary physical and mental challenges posed by these remote landscapes."

The Banff Mountain Book Festival, presented by Canadian Mountain Holidays, runs October 30 – November 1 in conjunction with 2002 Banff Mountain Summit (October 27—29) and the 27th annual Banff Mountain Film Festival (November 1 – November 3).

A number of finalist authors will be featured at the 2002 festivals, including Maria Coffey, Roger Hubank, Wade Davis, Jerry Kobalenko, Tim Cahill, Karsten Heuer, Kathryn Bridge, Greg Child, Eric Simonson, Lynn Hill and Linda Wylie.

The 2002 book festival jury includes Irish climber and writer Dermot Somers, editor of the Canadian Alpine Journal Geoff Powter, and New Zealand mountaineer Julie-Ann Clyma.

Winners of the following awards will be announced at the book festival during the evening presentation on Thursday, October 31:
