Mountain Communities Conference 2005: Speakers

Ross E. Mitchell

Ross E. Mitchell is an environmental sociologist with the Alberta Research Council in Edmonton. He holds degrees in rural sociology (PhD 2005) and forestry (B.Sc. 1987) from the University of Alberta, and in rural planning and development (M.Sc. 1998) from the University of Guelph. He has an extensive background in rural and resource sociology, political ecology, forest management, community development, and tourism.

Besides Canada, he has worked in Mexico, Peru, Paraguay, and Australia. His current work is on sociological indicators and deliberative democracy in resource-based areas of Alberta and elsewhere. His recent publications include a forthcoming book chapter called “Planting Trees, Building Democracy: Sustainable Forestry in Mexico,” in Environmental Issues in Latin America and the Caribbean by Springer Publishing, and “An Integrative Approach to Tourism: Lessons from the Andes of Peru” co-written with Paul Eagles in the Journal of Sustainable Tourism 9(1):4-28 (2001).
