Stanley F. Rose: “South Fork Mountain, Northern California”

Stanley F. Rose, South Fork Mountain, Northern California

“An early-January, 2005, snowstorm had dropped a couple of feet of fresh snow on the coastal ranges of northern California. I anticipated some interesting atmospheric conditions in the local mountains once the storm had blown through, so I packed my camera and tripod and drove to the boundary of Six Rivers National Forest. I spent all morning skiing the unplowed roads along the forested ridge line of South Fork Mountain. A few miles up the road, I spotted a lone evergreen draped in heavy snow, peering out from behind a wall of swirling fog. I set up my camera and waited patiently for a break in the fog to provide the desired lighting. The result put me in the holiday spirit and reflected the pure and wonderful scenery of the northern California wilderness.”

Stanley F. Rose is a meteorologist currently working for the National Weather Service in Pueblo, Colorado, and has been an artist and avid mountaineer for over 20 years. He developed a serious interest in photography upon moving to Eureka, California, in 2003, inspired by numerous hikes in the local mountains. Rose has recently published a photo essay on the region, entitled “Bigfoot Slept Here”, and is currently working on a calendar of Humboldt County, California, landscapes.
