David Stubbs: Moontime in Cave Falls
“Photographing the Greater Yellowstone at night has been an ongoing project since 2000, when I first wrote and shot a story about the surreal experience while on staff at the Jackson Hole Guide. The diversity of natural features throughout the region under the ephemeral light of the moon instilled a sense of visual bliss the first time I saw it. Combined with light-painting, the creative possibilities are limitless, and the dream-like experience of all-night shoots in solitude always proves to be adventurous. This image was shot on a frigid November night in 2006, just before Yellowstone National Park closed for the season. I had been photographing for two hours in below-zero temperatures in the mist and wind that surrounded the falls, when I took shelter in this cave. The stillness in such close proximity to the raging falls provided an amazing opportunity to explore the rich quality of light across the scene.”
Ranging from classic ski mountaineering in the French Alps to indigenous life in the Bolivian highlands, David Stubbs’ diverse portfolio of work defies categorization and includes eloquent landscapes and rich, emotional moments. His vivid eye has led him across the wide gamut of the photo industry, from nature and adventure work to news, documentary wedding, exhibition and commercial assignments. Based in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, since 1999, David is represented by Aurora Photos and Getty Images. His work has been published worldwide, appearing in National Geographic Adventure, Outside, The New York Times, and many others.
