“The project’s documentation of
Canadian radio art is admirable.”
- Lisa Sack, The Village
Voice
Did you know that as the Titanic
was sinking, amateur radio operators clogged the airwaves and, ever
since, radio regulations have limited free play on the airwaves?
This juicy historical tidbit is just one of many in the essays and
artworks in this book that re-open free play on radio. From
philosophical, historical and cultural analyses to poetic writings
by artists, this unique reference explores radio culture and the
unusual range of activity possible when contemporary artists use
radio as their medium. Radio will never sound the same again after
reading this book.
The book is also available with a
60-minute CD of radio artworks.
Daina Augaitis is currently
Associate Director/Chief Curator at the Vancouver Art Gallery. She
is the former Director of the Walter Phillips Gallery and Associate
Director of Professional Practice in Media & Visual Arts at the
Banff Centre.
Dan Lander is an editor and artist
living in Toronto. He is co-editor of Sound by Artists and a
regular producer of radio artworks that are aired internationally.
