2010 BISQC Quartets
On August 30, nine of the world’s finest emerging string quartets will arrive in Banff for the 10th Banff International String Quartet Competition. Chosen from dozens of applications from 16 countries, the preliminary jury selected an international roster of accomplished young musicians. The quartets are:

The all-Canadian Afiara String Quartet is the graduate resident string quartet at the Juilliard School in New York. The Afiara Quartet won the Concert Artists Guild International Competition in New York, after winning second prize at the Munich ARD International Music Competition.
The German/Swiss Amaryllis Quartet was trained in Basel by Walter Levin (first violinist of the LaSalle Quartet) and since 2007 has been coached by the Alban Berg Quartet in Cologne. The quartet won the Irene Steels Wilsing Prize at the “Premio Borciani” in Reggio Emilia, Italy, and two prizes at the international string quartet competition TROMP in Eindhoven, the Netherlands.
The Asasello Quartet was founded in 2000, and won first prize at the Migros Kulturporzent competition in Zurich, launching the start of their international touring. The Asasello Quartet began their own concert series in Cologne, focusing on juxtaposing contemporary and classical romantic repertoire to young audiences.
The Atrium Quartet was founded in 2000 in St. Petersburg. They were winners of first prize and Audience Prize of the 9th London International String Quartet Competition in 2003 and Grand-Prix of the 5th International String Quartet Competition in Bordeaux in 2007.

The Cecilia String Quartet was the resident string quartet at the Schulich School of Music of McGill University (2009-2010). They are quartet in residence of Jeunesses Musicales du Canada for their 60th Anniversary Season. Receiving the Prix de la sacem for the best performance of the commissioned work by Gilbert Amy at the 2010 Concours International de Quatuor à Cordes de Bordeaux, the Cecilia String Quartet also won first prize and the Melpomene prize at the 2008 Rutenberg Competition held at the University of South Florida, second prize at the 2008 Osaka International Chamber Music Competition and were winners of the 2007 Galaxie Rising Stars award in Canada. Recently, they were also appointed resident quartet fellows at Glenn Gould School in Toronto.
The Hausmann Quartet recently completed a graduate quartet residency at Kent State University as teaching assistants to the Miami String Quartet. In 2009, they were awarded a fellowship for Aspen Music Festival’s Centre for Advanced Quartet Studies, and currently hold the Morrison Fellowship Award in residency with the Alexander String Quartet at the International Center for the Arts at San Francisco State University.
The Noga Quartet was founded in 2008 in Berlin, and study with Eckart Runge and Heime Muller (Artemis Quartet). They won third prize at the Alice Samter Chamber Music competition in Berlin.
The Peresson Quartet are currently completing their studies at the Colburn School in Los Angeles, California.
Third Prize Winner
Quatuor Zaïde was formed in 2008 at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris. In 2010, they will be the resident ensemble of the academy of the Aix-en-Provence summer festival, and will be making their Wigmore Hall debut in January 2011.
The Gémeaux Quartet has cancelled due to personal reasons.
