Below are some frequently asked questions about Definition 2006. We'll keep this list updated as we near the submission
deadline.

Can I get my tape back?

Yes, but you must include a pre-paid mailer. No materials will be returned without either postage or courier prepayment.

Is there a theme to Definition 2006?

No. We're looking for works of all genres and themes. Our interest is to find the best works utilizing HD technology.

What is HD for Definition 2006?

HD means many things to many people. We're looking for works that use HD in the production and post-production processes. We recognize that there are many ways to get to a finished HD work. We welcome production approaches in their diversity from film to machinema. We require that all works be mastered in HD.

Who's the audience for Definition 2006?

The audience is quite large and quite diverse. BNMI has built a significant international audience over the past 11 years. In addition to the international audience, we're making a special effort to reach out to the New Media community in Alberta and Western Canada.

What happens if my work is accepted to Definition 2006?

We'll notify submitters of selected works immediately after the jury meeting. Submitters of selected works will be invited to the festival, and will be provided with accommodation and attendance to the festival and HD Summit, a $1000 value.

Can I submit a work that's already been broadcast?

Yes.

My work was created in 2003 is it eligible for submission?

Yes. We're accepting works produced in 2003 or later.

My work is feature-length. Will you consider it for the festival?

Yes.

Will you accept my work if it contains materials acquired under a Creative Commons license?

Yes. We're quite interested in works that legitimately build upon the works of others. We're also interested in works that may be distributed under a Creative Commons license.

I have permission to use most of my content. Do I need to have permission for everything?

Yes. You need to have permission to use all of the copyrighted material in your work.

What will happen with Definition 2006 after April?

We're currently exploring options for screenings in additional venues.

Is the March 15 deadline for entries firm?

Yes. We've got a really tight timeframe to notify entrants of their status, make arrangements on campus, and screen the festival. The jury meeting will take place right after the deadline, and late entries won't be included.

I'm not from Canada. Can I submit my work?

Yes.

I'm a student. Can I submit my work?

Yes.

I work in the television industry. Are you interested in commercial works?

Yes. We're interested in both commercial and independent works.

Can I put my work on an HD format if accepted, but not in time for the entry deadline?

No. We won't view any works not on an HD format.

My work is recorded onto an HD format that you don't mention. Can I still enter it?

Yes. Please contact us directly with additional details before submission.

Will there be Definition 2007?

At this point it looks like there will be. We'll announce the focus for Definition 2007 later this year.
