Kameko Higa – Conference Services Manager, Canada
Kameko Higa frequently visited Banff when she was younger to attend the Rocky Mountain Music Festival. Originally from Lethbridge, she decided that the mountains were a place she would love to live and work someday. She is now approaching her fifth year at The Banff Centre and she feels right at home.
Describe the positions you have held at The Banff Centre.
I began as a sales coordinator in Conferences, where I learned all about the Centre’s facilities and services. I was an initial contact for groups interested in making bookings. A year and a half ago, I became a conference services manager. I handle the needs of clients from the time they book, through to their time on-campus, to their departure. I also follow up to ensure clients return.
What are the important aspects of conference event planning and coordination?
I try to find out the client’s vision, goal, and the purpose of their event, and I help make everything come together within our facilities. I always emphasize with clients our uniqueness as a campus and educational institution; we are not just a hotel, and that sets us apart.
What is the best part of your job?
I enjoy dealing with clients face-to-face and learning about their organizations and programs. I also like making connections with people, whether they come for a yoga retreat or a research symposium. I especially love when they send me emails raving about their experiences here: the food and beverage services, the beds, the scenery, the staff, and so much more.
What are your interests outside of work?
I love hiking, camping, kayaking, and I have a powder blue cruiser bike that people may see me riding around town. I also play viola and enjoy mixed media painting and sculpture.
