In his recent book Farewell, My Subaru, Doug Fine shows how anyone can become (nearly) petroleum free in one year. Fine’s message is, “If this guy can do it, anyone can.”

In 2005 at age 35, Fine moved to a little-known valley in southern New Mexico to see if it was possible to have a truly sustainable lifestyle. When he began his new way of life, coyotes attacked his chickens and he was nearly electrocuted by his solar panels. A year later, Fine says that over 90 per cent of fossil fuels were out of his life, without him having to part with any Digital Age comforts. “I’ve given up none of my appliances, including washing machine, laptop, and, possibly most important of all, booming stereo sub-woofers.”

Fine has since traveled around the world, speaking to audiences about how the transition to sustainable living for individuals and corporations can be achieved through solar power, vegetable oil-powered vehicles, and a sustainable diet — without giving up a western lifestyle. More

Other mountain-inspired events in the Bow Valley this week:

Andrew Querner, Banff Mountain Photography Competition Winner (2006 Grand Prize), will be speaking on Friday, January 23, at 7:30 p.m. at the Canmore Community Co-op (115 - 802 Bow Valley Trail). Querner’s presentation, entitled “Document,” will touch on his most recent projects, which explore life in two of Canada’s most disparate regions — Fort McMurray, Alberta, and Newfoundland’s south coast. He’ll also provide an update on his multi-year project about mountain climbers. Joining him will be Banff-based artist Sarah Fuller who will be presenting photography from her recent projects.

The Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies in Banff is presenting "Everest — The West Ridge" on Thursday, January 22, at 7 p.m. Join Laurie Skreslet, first Canadian to summit Mount Everest, and filmmaker Guy Clarkson as they recall their experiences attempting the West Ridge in 2006.
