Little Women by Mark Adamo
Wednesday, August 4, 2010 - 7:30 p.m.
Eric Harvie Theatre
Adult $25 | Student/Senior $20 | Child $15
This light, lyrical contemporary opera breathes life into the characters of Louisa May Alcott’s classic 19th century novel. Composer and librettist Mark Adamo has taken the popular story of the March sisters – set during the American Civil War – and molded it into a melodic portrait of family, creativity, and transformation. Jo March is an aspiring writer growing up in a close-knit family, struggling with her own tempestuous nature, her ambitions at a time when girls were groomed to be wives and mothers, and finding a place in the world with the help of her three sisters and the boy next door.
Sung in English by members of The Banff Centre’s Opera as Theatre program, this acclaimed, family-friendly staging is the centerpiece of summer opera in Banff. Conducted by David Agler with Stage Direction by Kelly Robinson.
Pre-show chats, featuring senior repetituer Robin Wheeler, begin 45 minutes prior to each performance in the RBC West Lobby.
“A beautifully crafted work that shows remarkable confidence and does a brilliant job of molding Alcott’s tale into operatic form.” ~ Alex Ross, The New Yorker
