Sacred Headwaters and Great Bear Wild

© Paul Colangelo

These exhibits, the result of photographic RAVE expeditions by the International League of Conservation Photographers (iLCP), highlight threats to the headwaters of the Skeena, Nash, and Stikine Rivers and to the Great Bear Rainforest. Join Wade Davis, author, National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence and iLCP Fellow, along with iLCP photographer Paul Colangelo and representatives of the groups supporting the conservation efforts of the Great Bear Rainforest, to learn more about the need to conserve these unique ecosystems. www.ilcp.com

In an effort to derail proposed mining projects, the International League of Conservation Photographers (iLCP) was invited to conduct a photographic expedition, known as a Rapid Assessment Visual Expedition (RAVE), to elevate the importance of the Sacred Headwaters and draw attention to the misguided plans that would destroy this unique place.  Home to the Tahltan First Nation with drainages throughout the Gitxsan and Wet’suwet’en, Carrier and Sekani, Tsimshian, Nisga’a, Haisla, Tlingit, and Haida Nations, the headwaters of the Stikine, Skeena, and Nass Rivers are truly Sacred. iLCP Associate Fellow Paul Colangelo participated in the Sacred Headwaters RAVE in August of 2010.

It is hoped that these images will inspire the protection of this natural treasure.  A larger body of work documenting this endangered region is included in the soon to be published SACRED HEADWATERS by iLCP Fellow Wade Davis (speaking at the Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival on Saturday, October 29) with principal photography by iLCP Associate Fellow Carr Clifton, and contributions by Colangelo, Claudio Contreras, Wade Davis, Gary Fiegehen, Sarah Leen, Tom Peschak, Joe Riis, and Florian Schulz.
