J. R. Carpenter
J. R. Carpenter is a Canadian artist, performer, poet, novelist, new media writer and PhD researcher living and working in South Devon, England. She has been using the Internet as a medium for the creation and dissemination of non-linear narratives since 1993. Her first web-based work was created at The Banff Centre in 1995 and was recently re-published in BoulderPavement. Her most recent work, "Struts." was commissioned by San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Other of her pioneering works of digital literature have been published, performed and presented in journals, collections, galleries and museums around the world, including Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art in Toronto, Arnolfini in Bristol, Inspace in Edinburgh, Palazzo delle arti Napoli in Naples, Machfeld Studio in Vienna, E-Poetry in Barcelona, The Web Biennial in Istanbul, Cast Gallery in Tasmania and soundsRite in Australia.
J.R. Carpenter is a two-time winner of the Quebec Short Story Competition and a recipient of the Carte Blanche Quebec Award. She has been awarded research and production grants in literature and in new media from the Conseil des Arts de Montreal, Conseil des arts et des lettres du Quebec and Canada Council for the Arts. Her poetry, short fiction and essays have been translated into French, Spanish and Italian, broadcast on CBC Radio, widely anthologized and published in journals including Geist, Dandelion, The New Quarterly, Matrix, Rampike and Blood & Aphorisms. Her first novel, Words the Dog Knows, won the Expozine Alternative Press Award for Best English Book. Her second book, GENERATION[S], a collection of code narratives, was published by Traumawien in Vienna in 2010. In 2009 she was E-Writer-in-Residence at Dartington College of Art in South Devon, England. In 2010 she was awarded a full-fellowship to pursue a practice-led PhD Researcher at University College Falmouth, Cornwall, where she is now working in the emerging and converging fields of performance writing, locative narrative, and digital literature.
