Brian Ales
As an engineer/producer, Brian Ales has worked with a wide variety of artists such as Lyle Mays, The Tokyo String Quartet, ECM Records, the Boston Pops, and Gunther Schuller. As a composer, he's received several National Endowment for the Arts (U.S.) Composition Fellowships and won a BMI/Pete Carpenter Award for Film Composition, which led to stint working for noted television composer Mike Post in Los Angeles during the 1990s. He's also written for film and commercials, and his music has been heard on National Public Radio's All Things Considered (U.S.).
A graduate of New England Conservatory, his work both encompasses and blurs the distinction between the usually disparate disciplines of composition, production and engineering. He's had a long association with The Banff Centre, recording and producing several of his 5 Intuition Music releases there (including Safety in Numbers with guitarist Bill Frisell), as well as scoring/engineering numerous Banff Centre video projects.
