John Dunkerley

John Dunkerley

John Dunkerley was senior balance engineer at The Decca Record Co. Ltd. from 1968-1997, until the closure of the recording centre. He has subsequently worked with several major labels, including EMI Classics.

Dunkerley’s teacher and mentor was Kenneth Wilkinson, who was previously chief engineer of Decca until his retirement in 1980. Wilkinson’s career spanned more than fifty years, beginning with the start of electrical recording at Decca in 1929.

He has worked with all the U.K. orchestras and choruses including the major university choirs of Cambridge and Oxford. In Europe, he has recorded in Amsterdam, Berlin, Paris, Vienna, and St. Petersburg. He has worked in all the major North American centres, such as Chicago, Cleveland, Boston, San Francisco and, of course, Montreal.

The roster of artists with which Dunkerley has worked is too numerous to quote, but would be best described as the most significant performers of the last five decades. Film credits include Stanley Kubrick.

Dunkerley has worked on well over a thousand discs, including some sixty operas. Amongst his many awards are: The Gramophone, Grand prix du Disque, Edison, Juno, Deutsche Schalplattenpreis, Prix Italia, Japan Academy, Classical Brits, Prix Caecilia, Liszt Academy, Stereo Review (Record of the Year), and numerous Grammys.
