Simon Wynberg
guitar, Scotland
Wynberg is not only a virtuoso performer of distinction but one of the guitar’s foremost scholars, researching many areas of the instrument's neglected repertory, much of which he has recorded. Simon Wynberg enjoys a diverse career as soloist, chamber musician, accompanist, producer and arranger. He is the founder and artistic director of Music in Blair Atholl, Scotland, and was artistic director of Music at Speedside, the Guelph Spring Festival, and in the Caribbean. He is presently the artistic director of ARC, The Royal Conservatory of Music’s ensemble-in-residence. Simon Wynberg’s recent engagements include New York’s Bargemusic series, the Marseillan Festival in France, Colorado’s Strings in the Mountains Festival, and Alaska’s Sitka Festival. An enthusiastic chamber musician, Simon has performed and recorded with many eminent musicians and ensembles, including flautist William Bennett (Pot Pourri on ASV); oboists John Anderson (Summertime on Chandos) and Humbert Lucarelli; violinist Martin Beaver, Paul Rosenthal, and Scott St John; the English Chamber Orchestra and George Malcolm; the Alexander and Gabrieli String Quartets; and singers Russell Braun, Chris Pedro Trakas, Catherine Robbin, Monica Whicher, Linda Maguire, and Nathalie Paulin. His recordings have received a number of awards. Recordings include The Guitar Music of Ferranti and Ferrer (Penguin CD Guide Rosette), Trois Trios Concertants (Diapason Award), and De Fossa’s Three Quartets (Naxos), which won the Gramophone Critics’ Choice award.
