Digital Media Facilities

Digital media facilities are world-class spaces dedicated to research and project work in the areas of visualization, collaborative systems, and mobile media. These labs facilitate post-doctoral training opportunities, work study opportunities, applied research residencies, and partnerships and alliances with organization and industry stakeholders in information technology and digital media. With specialized equipment such as the 3D visualization CAVE, 3D printer, multitouch tables (including a Microsoft Surface), high-end imaging devices, and more, there exists an incredible opportunity for experimentation and collaboration across varieties of advanced media.

Advanced Research Technology (ART) Collaboration Lab

The Advanced Research Technology Labs (ART Labs) were founded at The Banff Centre to enhance new media research and project work in the areas of visualization, collaborative systems, and mobile media. These labs also facilitate post-doctoral training opportunities, work study opportunities, applied research residencies, and partnerships and alliances with organization and industry stakeholders in information technology and digital media.

Advanced Research Technology Mobile Lab

The ART Mobile Lab was created in 2005 to enable research into mobile and location-based media design, art, technology and cultures of use. In particular, we focus on media created for outdoor spaces and communities - innovative technologies, interactions, and experiences designed for remote locations from cultural heritage sites and wilderness areas to urban parks. Our primary activities include technical R&D (mainly software development for mobile devices), content creation, design research, participant ethnography and audience evaluation, and mobile media outreach and training.
