About our Practicum Program
Our unique and internationally-renowned Practicum Program provides a hands-on learning environment for experienced media professionals looking to refresh and upgrade their skills and expertise, as well as for media artists wishing to increase their practical skills/professional experience before transitioning to a career. Film & Media offers Practicum Programs in the areas of:
- Audio Engineering
- Audio Post Production Engineering
- Video Editing Design (VFX, Motion Graphics)
Practicum participants serve as assistants to expert staff and internationally-renowned guest faculty working in their field of production. In a team environment, participants are guided and evaluated through personalized mentorship activities including custom training exercises; artist/industry talks and lectures; workshops, and above all a focus on the production of new work.
Projects produced by Film & Media are often generated with the participation of various departments within The Banff Centre, including Music & Sound, Visual Arts, Theatre Arts, and Aboriginal Arts. Practicum participants collaborate with artists across disciplines, and cooperative creative ventures are encouraged in the service of Banff Centre and artist projects. Film & Media also produces work for commercial clients whose projects fall within the mandate of The Banff Centre's mission. This provides participants with exposure to a variety of projects, as well as the opportunity to work with a diverse group of clients including visiting filmmakers, artists, researchers, and faculty.
Participants accepted to the Practicum Program are awarded a weekly stipend to offset the costs associated with room and board during the program. Practicum Programs are offered as full year commitments or on a term basis.
