When her star rose in the late 1980s with a new form of folk pop, singer songwriter Suzanne Vega helped open doors for a decade’s worth of musicians, from Tracy Chapman to Sarah McLachlan, leading a movement that evolved into the massive success of the Lilith Fair tour, which Vega headlined every year it travelled through the 1990s. Though that scene left the spotlight, Vega never left the stage, and she’ll be at The Banff Centre March 5 as part of her latest tour.
With a new album, Close-Up, set to release, she’ll perform new tunes and old hits, in her classic Greenwich Village persona, what the New York Times recently described as “a poised, slightly diffident, slightly aloof bohemian exuding an innate regality.” Known for her intelligence, and clear, poetic voice, Vega rose out of the cafes and songwriters speakeasies of New York in the 1980s, cutting folky hits like Marlene on the Wall, Tom’s Diner, and Luka. A teacher, mentor, writer, and broadcaster, she has seven studio albums and one Grammy. Her most recent album, Beauty & Crime, is a love letter to her hometown New York City. Hailed by critics, Newsweek called her “as original, gritty, and gorgeous as ever.”
Upcoming performances in The Banff Centre’s Visiting Artists’ Series: Anton Kuerti (March 6), Yasuko Yukoshi with Masumi Seyama VI (March 7), Hawksley Workman (March 12), The Cottars (March 13), Soweto Gospel Choir (Mach 19), Quartette (March 21), Lizt Alfonso Dance Cuba (March 27), Gretchen Parlato (April 10), Grupo Corpo Brazilian Dance Theatre (April 17), and more.
