Over his 40-year career, hard-driving bluesman John Hammond has recorded almost 30 albums, won a Grammy and been nominated for four more, played with Tom Waits, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Robbie Robertson, Duane Allman, and Howlin’ Wolf. And along the way he’s preserved and played a library’s worth of near-forgotten blues and roots classics from past masters like Gary Davis, Mississippi John Hurt, and Skip James.

On Saturday, April 9, Hammond brings his guitar and his Delta-deep vocals for a solo concert on the intimate stage of The Banff Centre’s Margaret Greenham Theatre. Touring behind his latest album, In Your Arms Again, Hammond overlays his interpretations on traditional roots and blues tunes, adding in a few of his own compositions on his last couple of albums. Named acoustic blues artist of the year at the Blues Foundation’s 2004 W.C. Handy Awards (an award he’s won multiple times), his intense solo performances are backed by a passion for pure American music tradition.

Hammond’s friend Tom Waits described him best when he said “John Hammond with his guitar and slide, his harmonica and voice can make a sound like a whole train going by at night or like he’s tryin’ not to wake the baby. The road, the song, one is plugged into the other and they are both plugged into John Hammond and it’s the same thing.”

For tickets to John Hammond, call The Banff Centre Box Office at 1-800-413-8368 or 403-762-6301. Tickets are also available through TicketMaster.

The Banff Centre’s Playbill Series continues through May with performances by artists including The Waybacks (April 10), Baka Beyond (April 20), Jeff Healey (April 22), Harry Manx (April 23), Jesse Cook (May 20), and Old Blind Dogs (May 22).
