“If we have to have a definition of ‘world music’, this is it,” said BBC Radio’s Andy Kershaw about Baka Beyond. The band, a blend of African, Celtic, and Gaelic rhythms with members from the U.K., Brittany, Sierra Leone, Senegal, and Cameroon, brings its joyous, stage-filling brand of cross-culturalism to The Banff Centre’s Margaret Greenham Theatre on April 20.

The group started when guitarist and composer Martin Cradick, of the world music band Outback, and vocalist Su Hart ventured into the rainforest of Cameroon to visit with the Baka Pygmy people in 1991. They were inspired by the musical heritage of the Baka, and have been returning regularly, bringing royalty payments and helping to build a traditional Music House in the forest.

Since then, Baka Beyond has grown into an eight-person, world-touring fusion of Gaelic vocals, guitars, mandolins, and whistles with African drumbeats and centuries-old songs and rhythms. Their shows are a crackling mix of powerful beats, spectacular dancing and virtuoso musicianship.

For tickets to Baka Beyond, call The Banff Centre Box Office at 1-800-413-8368 or 403-762-6301. Tickets are also available through TicketMaster.

The Banff Centre’s Playbill Series continues through May with performances by artists including Jeff Healey (April 22), Harry Manx (April 23), Jesse Cook (May 20), and Old Blind Dogs (May 22).
