Harry Manx has travelled the world with the blues. From his home in Canada, he’s been touring and playing for years, taking time out in the early 90s to study with Indian raga-master Vishwa Mohan Bhatt. Manx’s solo shows today are layered with symphonic intricacy, with vocals, slide guitar, and banjo backed by lush falls of a unique guitar/sitar instrument called the mohan veena. On April 23, he returns to The Banff Centre for a concert in the Eric Harvie Theatre.

Manx’s style is most often likened to the music of Ry Cooder, who has fused a multitude of influences from Cajun to Tejano to North African to Celtic, and who first brought Bhatt onto the world stage. Manx spent five years studying with Bhatt, and the results of his stylistic mastery are clear on his latest album, West Eats Meet, which garnered him his third Juno nomination since 2001.

His original tunes seamlessly mesh Indian folk melodies with deep-south blues inflections and a touch of gospel. Called “assuredly Canada’s most versatile and expressive blues player” by Billboard, Manx brings his originals, and his fresh takes on classic blues tunes, into the intimate, expressive space his fans call “the Harry Zone.”

For tickets to Harry Manx, call The Banff Centre Box Office at 1-800-413-8368 or 403-762-6301. Tickets are also available through TicketMaster.
