Twenty playwrights selected for 2005 Banff playRites Colony

The Banff Centre and Alberta Theatre Projects have announced the 20 playwrights who will participate in the 2005 Banff playRites Colony, Canada’s premiere residential program for emerging and established theatre artists.

The playwrights will travel to The Banff Centre for an intensive professional development retreat to focus on the development of their work through live readings of their plays, coupled with feedback and insights from senior Canadian theatre practitioners. They will consult and collaborate with 14 experienced directors/dramaturges and eight versatile actors to help further investigate and refine their work.

This spring the Colony will be supporting and showcasing new Francophone plays for young audiences through its France/Banff Translation Exchange and Quebec Translation Program. A highlight of the Colony will be a free public reading on Saturday, May 21, of excerpts from the two new English translations of scripts from the France/Banff Translation Exchange Theatre for Young Audiences, as part of the Banff Summer Arts Festival.

An artist-defined program designed to meet the specific needs of each participating playwright, the Banff playRites Colony is a partnership of The Banff Centre, Alberta Theatre Projects, and The Canada Council. The playRites Colony is further supported by the Australia Council for the Arts and the France/Banff Translation Exchange.
