After a month-long creative residency at The Banff Centre, Montreal-based Sylvain Émard Danse will preview a new work at the Centre on Saturday, September 3. Called Temps de Chien, it is the second work in a series, choreographed by Émard, called Climatology of bodies. The piece will then have its world premiere in October at Montreal’s Théâtre Usine C.
With a score by Michel F. Coté and Tim Hecker, Temps de Chien uses climate as a metaphor for the effects of change on the human body and the human psyche. A piece for six dancers, it expresses the uncertainty and uneasiness that people experience when they live in an unsettled and constantly changing environment. The piece is an international co-production between The Banff Centre, the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, the Canada Dance Festival, and Le Grand Théâtre de Lorient in France.
Winner of the Jean A. Chalmers Award for Choreography from the Ontario Arts Council, and the Canada Council’s Jacqueline Lemieux Award, Sylvain Émard has directed his own dance company since 1987 and has created more than 20 original works in contemporary dance. His productions include Te Souvient-il?, which he created with choreographer Louise Bedard, Scènes d’Intérieur, which he produced for the New Territories Festival in Glasgow, Scotland, and a recent collaboration with director Robert Lepage on the opera 1984, which premiered in May 2005 at the Royal Opera House of Covent Garden.
The Banff Centre’s Playbill Series continues on Friday, October 21 with a concert by Ian Tyson in the Eric Harvie Theatre.
