David Francey has an uncommon ability to reach out to his audiences through song and is on his way to becoming a Canadian folk legend. Francey’s music blends elements of traditional Scottish folk tunes with a rural American style. The captivating result has been described as earthy, politically tinged lyrical poetry. Francey has performed at countless Canadian and international folk festivals and his works have been recorded and performed by artists worldwide. David Francey will appear in concert at The Banff Centre’s Margaret Greenham Theatre on October 28.

Born in Ayrshire, Scotland in 1954, Francey immigrated with his family to Canada when he was 12. Francey’s strong vocals and powerful lyrics are reflective of his early influences. Both the traditional Scottish music of Francey’s childhood and his strong attachment to the Canadian countryside, developed through years of cross-county travel, can be felt in his performances.

Francey’s keen interest in politics and world events combined with his deep interest in the people he has met through his travels developed the distinct social conscience that forms the foundation of his songs. Greg Quill, The Toronto Star, describes Francey’s songs as “pieces that contain countless compelling observations, yarns, confessions, hopes, dreams and regrets, all wrung from lives, homes, and landscapes that are hauntingly familiar, undeniably Canadian”.

David Francey’s last two albums; Far End of Summer and Skating Rink won Juno Award’s in 2002 and 2004. His most recent album The Waking Hour was nominated for a 2005 Juno. Francey’s song Saints and Sinners took first place in the folk category of the 2004 USA Songwriting Competition. As described by celebrated Canadian artist James Keelaghan, “David Francey is the best Canadian folk writer that I have heard in 20 years. Quite simply, almost every song that I’ve heard so far I wished I’d written.”

The Banff Centre’s Playbill Series continues with performances by Jane Bunnett and Spirits of Havana (November 12); Banff Players - Waiting for the Parade (November 18 & 19); and The Cottars (November 24).
