Jane Bunnett and her band Spirits of Havana will bring their powerful fusion of jazz, Cuban music, and the spiritual rhythms of North America and Africa to The Banff Centre’s Margaret Greenham Theatre, November 12. Already having won a place in the ears, hearts, and minds of jazz fans around the globe, Bunnett and her hot band of Canadian and Cuban musicians guarantee to have the house moving and grooving.
One of the foremost jazz musicians in Canada, Jane Bunnett is recognized around the world for her creative integrity, improvisational daring, and courageous artistry. While her original jazz works, influenced by legends Charles Mingus and Rahsaan Roland Kirk, earned her a Juno nomination in 1988 it was a trip to Cuba that began to set Bunnett’s music style apart. Bunnett’s passion for Cuba’s rich musical culture fueled her work, resulting in a genuine meld of Afro-Cuban melodies and jazz.
Bunnett has showcased her diversity as a flutist, saxophone player, and pianist with performances throughout Canada, the United States, Europe, and Cuba. She is consistently recognized at Canada’s Juno Awards and was nominated for back-to-back Grammy awards for Best Latin Jazz CD with her Alma de Santiago and Cuban Odyssey releases. Most recently Bunnett and producer, partner, and fellow musician Larry Cramer released the CD Red Dragonfly featuring the world renowned Pendereski String Quartet and covering folk music from around the world.
