On November 24, The Banff Centre welcomes Cape Breton’s latest musical success story, The Cottars, followed on November 25 by the West Coast’s favourite acoustic/vocal trio, UHF. Both bands will play the Centre’s Margaret Greenham Theatre as part of the Playbill Series.

The Cottars are a stunningly talented group of four young Cape Breton Celtic musicians. Brother/sister pairs Cairan and Fiona MacGillivray and Jimmy and Roseanne MacKenzie have all been playing traditional folk and Celtic music since their early childhood. Ranging in age from 15-17, each of the foursome is a multi-instrumentalist, singer and stepdancer. Masters of lively traditional music, The Cottars have a flair for innovation and experimentation, and have been heralded by The Boston Globe as “one of the hottest acts in the folk world today”. Already having produced two critically-acclaimed, self-released albums, The Cottars have just signed a multi-album recording contract with legendary folk and roots label Rounder Records. The contract will include a 24-city U.S. tour during which The Cottars will open for Celtic music giants The Chieftans.

Currently a fixture on the Canadian music scene, UHF began as a one-time-only collaboration for the 1989 Vancouver Winter Roots Festival. A convergence of distinctive solo voices, creative energy, and musical abilities, UHF brings together prolific singer-songwriters Shari Ulrich, Bill Henderson, and Roy Forbes. While all three continue to enjoy successful solo careers, working together as UHF has resulted in two highly successful albums and nationwide acclaim for the group’s dynamic acoustic music. Self described as a twin guitar attack complemented by fiddle and mandolin harmonies, UHF creates a special blend of roots music that is a powerful force.

The Banff Centre’s Playbill Series continues with performances by Banff Players - Waiting for the Parade (November 18 & 19); Tri-Continental (December 3); Corb Lund and the Hurtin’ Albertans (December 4); and The Rankin Sisters (December 10).
