Imagery of oil rigs, trucks, wide open spaces, and whiskey are infused into the songs of Corb Lund and the Hurtin’ Albertans. Hailing from four generations of ranchers and cowboys, Lund creates music influenced by his experiences riding horseback, chasing cattle, and rodeoing in Southern Alberta, and the decade he spent on the indie rock scene with his previous group, the smalls.
The resulting sound is a convincing combination of roots music, western swing, country rock, ragtime, and acoustic blues. As part of their annual Christmas tour, Lund and his band will bring their trailblazing roots-country sound to The Banff Centre’s Margaret Greenham Theatre Sunday, December 4, at 8 p.m.
Beyond blending a little bit of country and a little bit of rock, Lund produces music that places him among the ranks of such rebel western musicians as Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings. His vivid, poetic lyrics avoid the usual country music clichés, reflecting instead a more thoughtful, oppositional spirit and worldly understanding. Three more prairie boys, Kurt Ciesla, Grant Siemens, and Brandy Valgardson, make up the Hurtin’ Albertans. The band lays down solid Western acoustic sounds and then goes further, adding elements of echoing standup bass, banjo, slide, and fiddle.
