African Guitar Summit, a star-studded collective of African-Canadian guitarists who wowed the audience at the 2005 Live8 concert, will play The Banff Centre’s Eric Harvie Theatre, January 14.
The 2005 Juno Award winners for World Music Album of the Year, African Guitar Summit is led by the smooth fire and grooves of Guinean guitarist/singer Alpha Yaya Diallo, elder Ghanian guitar master Pa Joe, the bluesy guitar of Burundi/Rwanda’s Mighty Popo, the heartbeat of drummer Kofi Ackah, and the festive guitar playing of Kenya’s Adam Solomon, backed-up by a top-notch band of Canada’s best African-Canadian players.
Their collaboration unites the musicians, each of them a master of individual style, and creates a one-of-a-kind musical experience. Building on the ongoing loop of musical influences between Africa and the west, African Guitar celebrates a diverse, culturally distinctive group of musicians, who have all brought musical gifts of their own to this country.
Tickets for all Banff Centre events are available through The Banff Centre Box Office: 1-800-413-8368 or 403-762-6301. The Centre’s Playbill Series continues in 2006 with: The Shanghai Circus (January 22); Red Sky Performance Theatre (January 27); Eric Bibb and Linda Tillery (January 29); Alasdair Fraser with Natalie Haas (February 1); Corky Siegel’s Chamber Blues (February 5); Decidedly Jazz Danceworks (February 8), and much more.
