Monday, January 9, 7:00 p.m., Lux Cinema, Wolf & Bear Mall
Tickets: $11 (call to reserve, cash only at the door)
Critically acclaimed French Canadian film C.R.A.Z.Y. is a poignant coming-of-age tale set amidst an uncanny depiction of family life in Montreal, from the sixties to the present. Written by Jean-Marc Vallée (Liste Noire) and inspired by co-writer François Boulay’s own childhood, the film’s engrossing script makes expert use of familial interactions creatively filmed by Vallée, whose touches of magic realism reveal the inner workings of the suburban Québécois family. C.R.A.Z.Y. will play at the Lux Cinema on Monday, January 9, as part of The Banff Centre’s Reel Time film series.
C.R.A.Z.Y. stars Michel Côté who plays a loving, but old-fashioned father of five boys. Zachary, the fourth son, played by Marc-André Grondin, is struggling with his identity, trying to deny his homosexuality, while searching for acceptance from his family. Clearly a personal, character driven piece, Vallée tells the story making use of freeze-frames, slow-motion, and montage, in addition to building key scenes around telling songs by Pink Floyd and David Bowie. Dealing with both the warmest and cruelest matters of families, C.R.A.Z.Y. is more than a coming-out movie, as it broadly addresses ideas around acceptance, aiming at anyone who has felt different.
In September 2005, C.R.A.Z.Y. won the Toronto-City Award for Best Canadian Feature Film at the Toronto International Film Festival, and recently was announced as Canada’s submission in the foreign-language category at the 2006 Oscars.
The Reel Time film series is presented by The Banff Centre’s Walter Phillips Gallery and Film Circuit, an initiative of the Toronto International Film Festival Group. Each film screening also includes a Canadian short. Proceeds from ticket sales will support programs at the Walter Phillips Gallery and partner charities.
The Reel Time film series continues into 2006 with: Water (February 6), Paradise Now (March 6), and Capote (April 3). Tickets to each screening are $11 or a Winter 4-pack can be purchased for $38.00 (January to April screenings). Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door (cash only). Contact the Banff Centre Box Office at 762.6301 for more information.
