Red Sky brings Aboriginal culture to life for family show at The Banff Centre January 27

Red Sky, the acclaimed Toronto-based Aboriginal theatre company, makes a stop at The Banff Centre January 27 to present two original family performances in one evening. A mix of theatre, dance, and music, both shows link traditional and contemporary Aboriginal culture to indigenous cultures around the world.

Written by playwright Tomson Highway, Caribou Song follows the journey of two Cree children in Canada’s north, as they track the caribou migration by dogsled. In Raven Stole the Sun, writer Drew Hayden Taylor (winner of a 2005 Banff Centre Fleck Fellowship) retells the mythological Tlingit story of the trickster spirit Raven as he schemes to steal the stars, moon, and sun to bring light to the world. The show is particularly recommended for children seven and older, and includes a live musical interlude.

Formed in 2000 by artistic director Sandra Laronde, Red Sky is dedicated to bringing new forms of contemporary Aboriginal performance to the stage. Engaging some of Canada’s best writers to create original new works and retellings of traditional First Nations stories, the company brings these dynamic, creative stories to local, national, and international audiences.
