Inspired by Ndebele traditions in music, dance, and language, the dynamic Zimbabwean group Black Umfolosi bring their exuberant stage show to The Banff Centre’s Margaret Greenham Theatre on February 18.

The group, based in Buluwayo, has become one of Zimbabwe’s most successful exports. Building traditional South African dress and dance into their routines, they sing about universal themes like family, as well as contemporary African concerns — apartheid, AIDS, and war. Since forming their original singing group in 1982, Black Umfolosi has traveled around the world, bringing their highly energized performances to countless audiences.

The concerts mix a cappella harmonies, high kicks, gospel melodies, tribal headdresses, miners’ gear, and traditional rhythms for a presentation that Folk Roots Magazine called “a marvelous blend of rhythm, melody, and harmony welded together with enormous complexity.”

Tickets for all Banff Centre events are available through The Banff Centre Box Office: 1-800-413-8368 or 403-762-6301. The Centre’s Playbill Series continues with: Colin James (February 24), Cori Caulfield Molt (March 2), Dulcinea Langfelder & Co. (March 4), The Laura Love Band (March 5), Flook (March 10), Al Stewart (March 11), Rosheen (March 19), and much more.
