Vancouver based, Cori Caulfield is a well respected choreographer, interdisciplinary performer, instructor, and artistic director. She can also be counted on for tackling such weighty topics as gender stereotypes and the objectification of women, her latest work being no exception. A full-length dance-theatre production, Molt is a true collaboration, including an original electroacoustic score, compelling video imagery, and unique costumes and set design. Cori Caulfield will present Molt at The Banff Centre’s Margaret Greenham Theatre, Thursday, March 2.
Described as an original “adult fairy tale” Molt is about a magpie whose desire to be a beautiful bird leads her to the enchanted forest where mostly bad things happen. Beginning with a visual metaphor for the reduction of human beings into consumers, the production moves on to comment on classical ballet and its history of neutralizing female power. Said to have the feeling of a very personal journey, Molt demonstrates both Caulfield’s trademark humour and her combination of sensuality and precision, while exploring the link between outdated female myths and avian imagery.
A recipient of the prestigious Paul D. Fleck Fellowship in 2004, Caulfield created Molt during her residency at The Banff Centre in October 2004. Established in 2001, the Fleck Fellowships allow senior artists in all disciplines to participate in independent artistic residencies at The Banff Centre to create new work or collaborate with other arts programs at the Centre.
