Categorized as folk-funk, House/Celtic, and even African/Appalachian, singer songwriter Laura Love has created something that is hard to label. What do you call a style that incorporates folk style melodies, wide ranging harmonies, funk bass, and acoustic instrumentation with leanings toward jazz? One thing that is known is that Love is widely regarded as one of the most significant and exciting artists to emerge from the Northwest music scene in recent memory. Laura Love and her band will play The Banff Centre’s Margaret Greenham Theatre, March 5.

An African-American funk bassist with an astonishing voice, Love’s influences include blues, bluegrass, jazz, folk, gospel, reggae, and country. This wide ranging musical taste combined with a difficult childhood and a personal interest in women’s studies, race relations, and civil rights has led to Love’s lyrical and passionate, universally-themed songs. Her ninth CD, You Ain’t Got No Easter Clothes was released in 2004 together with a book of the same name. Containing her memoirs the book reconfirms the trademark wit and insight that Love has exhibited in her songwriting.

Best appreciated in her live performances, Love has been touring with her band regionally since 1990 and nationally since 1992. She has had overwhelming success at music festivals, concerts, and clubs across North America. Love’s band includes electric bass, acoustic guitars, percussion, tongue drum, and accordion.
