With a modernist combo of flutes, guitar, and bodhran, the Celtic quartet Flook plays The Banff Centre’s Margaret Greenham Theatre on March 10 as part of the Centre’s Playbill Series. Named Group of the Year at the 2006 BBC Folk Awards, the four members of Flook give traditional Irish music an eclectic and innovative twist.
Presenting a show that The Scotsman described as “Sheer musical magic…stunning technique, impossibly agile rhythm work, and virtuoso flights of improvisation,” Flook celebrates its 10th anniversary with a new album, Haven, and a North American tour. The group has also been described as “a sensational live act…in the front rank of innovators,” by the Rough Guide to Irish Music.
Originally a partnership between two virtuoso flutists, the group has grown in influences and inspiration, adding traditional instruments, new sounds, and exponential audiences around the world. An acoustic fusion of Irish roots music with contemporary beats, and world-music influences (their last couple of recordings have welcomed an international roster of musicians), Flook’s music has been described by the Glasgow Sunday Herald as “multi-layered, rhythmically sophisticated, and meltingly beautiful.”
Tickets for Flook are available through The Banff Centre Box Office at 762-6301 or 1-800-413-8368. The Banff Centre’s Playbill series continues with Al Stewart (March 11), Rosheen (March 19), Guy Davis (March 21 and 22), Pavlo (April 8), Saffire (April 9), Stuart McLean (April 12), and Ron Hynes (April 23).
