Newfoundland singer/songwriter Ron Hynes to play The Club at The Banff Centre

From humble beginnings in his home province of Newfoundland, playing the coffeehouse circuit through the Maritimes and Ontario, Ron Hynes has carved out a reputation as an eloquent, roots-styled singer/songwriter. Affectionately known as "Newfoundland's Godfather of songwriting", Ron Hynes will play to an intimate crowd in The Club at The Banff Centre’s Theatre Complex, April 23.

With a songwriting career that spans more than 30 years, Hynes has composed hundreds of songs, including the folk classic Sonny's Dream. His songs have been covered by artists around the world including Emmylou Harris, Christy Moore, Prairie Oyster, The Irish Descendants, Susan Aglukark, The Cottars, and many more. In the 70’s, Hynes was a founding member of The Wonderful Grand Band, a musical comedy show complete with a traditional/folk/rock band. The Wonderful Grand Band was featured on CBC and toured Canada from coast-to-coast.

The latest CD from Hynes, Get Back Change won Album of the Year at the 2004 East Coast Music Awards, making him a five-time East Coast Music Award winner, a Genie Award winner, and a Juno and Canadian Country Music Award nominee. He has also has received honourary awards for his songwriting and his contribution to the cultural life of Newfoundland.
