2006 Paul D. Fleck Fellowships in the Arts
Music & Sound: Osvaldo Golijov (Boston / Chicago)
Named Composer of the Year by Musical America, Argentinean-born Osvaldo Golijov has received commissions from major ensembles and institutions all over the world. Recently named co-composer-in-residence by the Chicago Symphony, Golijov has collaborated extensively with the St. Lawrence String Quartet (commemorated in the Grammy-nominated EMI recording Yiddishbbuk), the Kronos Quartet, and filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola. His 2000 commission for the European Music Festival, St. Mark Passion, was a benchmark in modern musical achievement. While in Banff, Golijov will be working on the original score for Coppola’s new film, Youth Without Youth, a new work for cello and orchestra for Yo-Yo Ma and the Boston Symphony, a string quartet for the SLSQ and Kronos Quartet, and preliminary work on a new opera commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera.
