Literary Arts: Alex Ross (New York)
Music critic at The New Yorker since 1996, and before that music critic at the New York Times from 1992 to 1996, Alex Ross has written essays and reviews that have appeared in publications including The New Republic, The London Review of Books, Spin, Lingua Franca, and the collection Best American Essays. Growing up, he studied piano, oboe, and composition, and at Harvard College studied music, European history, and English literature. He was awarded a Holtzbrinck Fellowship at the American Academy in Berlin in 2003. During his Fleck residency, Ross will be accessing The Banff Centre’s extensive music library and archives for work on his first book The Rest is Noise, a cultural history of 20th century music that will be published in 2007 by Farrar, Straus & Giroux.
