Presented as part of the fall 2006 Playbill Series
Italian folk-pop-dance band Fiamma Fumana will kick-off the fall Playbill Series at The Banff Centre with a blast of Italian traditional music flavoured by a modern techno beat. Like the good Italian espresso that band members admit they are addicted to, Fiamma Fumana mixes tradition and high-octane energy to create a potent musical brew.
The band combines traditional Italian songs and ballads with urban dance grooves and state-of-the-art electronica. Using guitar, accordion, whistles, flutes, Italian bagpipes, and vocals coupled with the loops and samples of contemporary club music, this four-piece group reinterprets the songs of previous generations for today’s audiences.
The band members of Fiamma Fumana come from diverse backgrounds. Alberto Cottica, veteran of the acclaimed Modena City Ramblers, hails from Emilia Romagna and plays accordion, guitar, and piano. Tuscan Jessica Lombardi is a Celtic music devotee who plays flutes and whistles as well as the bagpipes. Also from Tuscany, lead vocalist Lisa Kant brings a background in electronic music and fashion design to the band. Medhin Paolos is the group’s DJ, an Eritrean-Italian who keeps the loops and samples flowing. These dynamic contrasts are captured in the band’s name, which translates as flame and fog.
Hailed by critics from across North America and Europe, Fiamma Fumana got the crowd on their feet when they last played The Banff Centre, opening for Shooglenifty in August 2005.
The Banff Centre’s fall 2006 Playbill Series debuts with a trio of shows in late September, including Fiamma Fumana, Sarakasi — The Amazing African Acrobats (September 29), and Sons of Maxwell (September 30).
Tickets for all Banff Centre events are available through The Banff Centre Box Office: 1-800-413-8368 or 403-762-6301.
