With their fresh and intellectual approach to Latin music, Bomba guarantees to deliver a high energy live performance filled with great dance rhythms. Joined by their musical counterparts from Cuba, the band fuses the traditional with the contemporary, and pulls together influences of where they come from, with those from where they live. They explore rhythms and melodies from across the Americas, spanning a wide range of evocative styles from timba, rumba, son, salsa, and songo to funk and jazz.
Originally formed in Edmonton, Bomba’s roots are spread across the continents with members from Chile, Brazil, Cuba, and Canada. Emerging from a new generation of musicians, conga/percussion player Mario Allende, bassist Rubim de Toledo, and pianist/keyboardist Chris Andrews collaborate with a variety of additional players as they intellectually pursue fusions and innovations in their music.
Invited to perform at the Havana Jazz Festival in 2004, Bomba members were introduced to Cuban music giants including violinist Neraldo Duran Torriente, drummer and timbale player Raul Gomez Tabera, and saxophone and flute player Livan Morejon Quian. Bomba’s most recent album Entre Sol y Luz, recorded with musicians from Cuba, exemplifies the band’s talents in blending Cuban, African, jazz, and funk music.
Bomba will bring their fiery Latin rhythms to the Margaret Greenham Theatre at The Banff Centre on Friday, October 6, as part of the fall 2006 Playbill Series.
The Banff Centre’s fall 2006 Playbill Series continues through October with John Reischman and the Jaybirds (October 20), Montréal Danse – Furies Alpha 1/24 (The Monsters Within) (October 21), and Harry Manx and Michael Kaeshammer (October 27).
Tickets for all Banff Centre events are available through The Banff Centre Box Office: 1-800-413-8368 or 403-762-6301.
