When he was kidnapped and killed by extremists in Pakistan in 2002, Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl left behind a legacy of involvement not only in journalism and world affairs, but also in music. An accomplished musician who had joined ensembles and bands wherever he found himself in the world, Pearl considered music to be a universal language that easily crossed cultural boundaries. After his death, Pearl’s family created the Daniel Pearl Foundation, which, among other initiatives, launched World Music Days, an annual celebration of music in venues around the world on and around Pearl’s October 10 birthday.
On October 13, The Banff Centre will dedicate the weekly Concert Night Out to World Music Days, joining hundreds of other concerts and performances in more than 60 countries around the world. Not intended as a fundraiser for the Daniel Pearl Foundation, World Music Days were simply created to bring people together around the world in an appreciation of music, underscored by the three values that Daniel and his family considered to be essential to humanity: tolerance, friendship, and a respect for cultural diversity.
The centerpiece of the October 13 Concert Night Out will be a performance of Eli Eli, created by Stanford University music professor and composer Jonathan Berger as a tribute to Pearl. This haunting string quartet composition was premiered at the first World Music Day on October 10, 2002.
Music and Sound at The Banff Centre presents Concert Night Out performances every Friday evening through December 15 in the Rolston Recital Hall. Overseen by the Centre’s new director of music, Barry Shiffman, the series features an international roster of emerging professional musicians, accompanied by acclaimed visiting musicians and composers from around the world.
