As individual artists, Valdy and Gary Fjellgaard are two of Canada’s great singers, songwriters, and storytellers. By combining their talents, coming together for recordings and live performances, they have proven themselves to be even greater as a team. The sound produced is best described as Western Roots music – music that draws on all aspects of life in the west. An exceptional blending of harmonies, lyrics, humour, and guitars, Valdy and Fjellgaard will play The Banff Centre’s Margaret Greenham Theatre, Friday, November 17.

A mainstay of Canadian folk music for over 34 years, Valdy has two Juno Awards (Folk Singer of the Year and Folk Entertainer of the Year), seven Juno nominations, and four Gold Albums to his credit. Also a Juno Award winner (Country Male Vocalist of the Year) and a recent inductee into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame, Gary Fjellgaard is an acoustic guitar master who delivers everything from silky smooth vocals to riveting yodeling and humourous tales of his life in the woods.

In 2000, Valdy and Fjellgaard teamed up to record the album Contenders, and since then they have been on the road to the delight of audiences nationwide. The two veterans of Canadian folk and country music touch on common themes with their music, singing about the mountains and the sea, cowboys and fisherman, and sunsets and rain, with deep authenticity and understanding. Exuding laid-back charm and distinctive chemistry Valdy and Fjellgaard take audiences on a trip to discover what it is to be Canadian and how this vast country shapes its people.

The Banff Centre’s fall 2006 Playbill Series continues with Xavier Rudd (November 26 and 27), The Barra MacNeils Christmas Concert (December 2), and Corb Lund (December 8).

Tickets for all Banff Centre events are available through The Banff Centre Box Office: 1-800-413-8368 or 403-762-6301.
