Presented as part of the winter 2007 Playbill Series
An edgy, boundary-pushing theatrical performance that explores the original myth of Oedipus will kick-off the winter/spring 2007 Playbill Series at The Banff Centre. Presented by Pan Pan Theatre, one of Ireland’s most innovative contemporary companies, Oedipus Loves You promises audiences a lot to look at, listen to, and think about. Described as highly original, innovative, and physical, Pan Pan Theatre will present Oedipus Loves You at the Margaret Greenham Theatre, Saturday, January 20.
In Pan Pan’s Oedipus Loves You the Oedipus myth is the driving force that helps to create a real sense of dramatic tension. In their retelling of the classic tale of Oedipus, Pan Pan Theatre dissects some of the questions posed by Sophocles two and a half thousand years ago and asks, what can Oedipus tell us today? The original myth, which framed the life’s work of Sigmund Freud, involves Oedipus unwittingly killing his father and marrying his mother. Raising questions about families, relationships, heroism, taboo, sexuality, and destiny, the myth still confounds society today.
Oedipus Loves You will be played out by a dynamic group of all-round performers, some of the most experienced and well known actors and singers in Ireland. The performers play and sing their own live music and on-stage throughout the production receive input from their director through a radio head set system. Set in a contemporary imaginary suburbia the performance uses aesthetics traditionally associated more with visual arts than with theatre.
Since its beginnings in 1993, Pan Pan Theatre has produced 12 highly visual and original productions. Having toured throughout the world, with Oedipus Loves You Pan Pan Theatre will be performing in Canada for the first time. The first of a series of Canadian performances will begin at Calgary’s One Yellow Rabbit’s High Performance Rodeo, January 11 to 13.
The Banff Centre’s winter/spring 2007 Playbill Series continues into the new year with the Incredible Shanghai Acrobats (January 21), Charlie A’Court and Matt Anderson (January 27), and Martyn Joseph (January 31).
Tickets for all Banff Centre events are available through The Banff Centre Box Office: 1-800-413-8368 or 403-762-6301.
