Aerial feats, spinning plates, bicycle tricks, acrobatics, contortions, comedy, and vibrant costumes will all be part of the spectacle when the Incredible Shanghai Acrobats come to The Banff Centre. These astonishing athletes and performers with unbelievable skills and boundless energy will bring more than two thousand years of Chinese circus traditions to the Eric Harvie Theatre, Sunday, January 21.

Exceptionally well-trained performers with amazing strength, dexterity, and balance, the Incredible Shanghai Acrobats blend Chinese acrobatic traditions with modern styles to create an evening of breathtaking enjoyment for all ages. A beautifully orchestrated presentation of Chinese circus acts dating back to harvest festivals of 2000 years ago, this modern day performance is enhanced by fabulous choreography, lighting, sets, and music.

The unique artistic style of Hai, which is the magic and acrobatics of Shanghai, has undergone thousands of years of evolution. Where there were once several world famous independent acrobatic troupes in Shanghai, these merged into the Shanghai Magic and Acrobatic Troupe. More recently, a branch troupe, the New Shanghai Circus was established in order to share the fine traditions of Chinese folk arts with the world by touring internationally.

In the spring of 1999 the New Shanghai Circus performed on Broadway, in New York City. This record breaking "sold out on Broadway" show won the title "Best Foreign Production on Broadway" for the troupe that year.

The Banff Centre’s winter/spring 2007 Playbill Series continues into the new year with the Charlie A’Court and Matt Anderson (January 27), Martyn Joseph (January 31), Stephen Fearing (February 4), and The Arrogant Worms (February 10).
