Martyn Joseph just wants to make sense of the world. A gifted and gracious Welshman and one of the foremost singer/songwriters of his generation, Joseph is trying to write songs that make a difference. His songs are a musical archive of our times and our tribulations, delivered with passion, humour, and hope. Martyn Joseph will play The Banff Centre’s Margaret Greenham Theatre, Wednesday, January 31.
One of Britain’s leading contemporary music magazines, MoJo, describes Joseph as being “an artist of enduring worth.” He has earned this and many similar reviews through his talented use of lyrical narrative to speak to his audiences. He fills his songs with contemporary protests against injustice and inhumanity, comments on the joys and fragilities of love, and observations of social history and political climate. In the tradition of a six-string balladeer Joseph is a catalyst and an interpreter, playing songs that are dark, but that are always illuminated with an undercurrent of optimism.
Originally from Penarth, South Wales, Joseph made the charts in the 90s with singles such as “Dolphins Make Me Cry,” “Working Mother,” and “Please Sir.” Preferring to work under his own Pipe Records label he has received critical acclaim and increased his fan base with recent albums Whoever It Was That Brought Me Here Will Have To Take Me Home (2003) and Deep Blue (2005). Accustomed to playing 200 performances a year, Joseph has toured and appeared with artists including Suzanne Vega, Chris De Burgh, and Art Garfunkel.
The Banff Centre’s winter/spring 2007 Playbill Series continues with Stephen Fearing (February 4), The Arrogant Worms (February 10), Lunch at Allen’s (February 11), and African Guitar Summit (February 17).
Tickets for all Banff Centre events are available through The Banff Centre Box Office: 1-800-413-8368 or 403-762-6301.
