What began as a casual lunch at Toronto’s famed Allen’s restaurant has turned into a unique collaboration of four of Canada’s finest individual performers. Realizing they had never performed together during their 30-year friendship, Murray McLauchlan, Marc Jordan, and Ian Thomas, invited along Cindy Church, and created a DVD featuring a live recording session of the group. Much more than a simple recording of a group of songwriters, the union became an intimate acoustic gathering of the foursome, delivering their signature classic hits as well as all the banter, storytelling, and humour that can only result from honest longstanding friendships.
Promising an evening of great music and good fun, Lunch at Allen’s will grace the stage of The Banff Centre’s Margaret Greenham Theatre on Sunday, February 11. Through storytelling in words, music, and song, Lunch at Allen’s showcases the exceptional talents and amusing irreverence of the four friends. Providing accompaniment for each other with a variety of instruments, vocal harmonies, laughs, and tall tales, each performer brings a wealth of experience as a solo artist.
Winner of 11 Juno awards, Murrary McLauchlan has been writing and singing for over 30 years. He has performed at major music festivals and across the club circuit, has 18 albums to his credit, and is a mainstay on Canadian airwaves from coast to coast.
Marc Jordan and Ian Thomas’s songs have been recorded by a huge array of artists including Rod Stewart, Bette Midler, Diana Ross, and Santana. Jordan spent 15 years making and producing records for Warner Bros., BMG, and Atlantic Records, has a host of television and film credits, and 11 recordings under his own name. Thomas made his first mark on the Canadian music scene in 1973 with his international hit Painted Ladies. He has 15 albums to his credit and has received a Juno award, Juno nominations, and three SOCAN classic awards.
Making her first recordings with the Great Western Orchestra, Cindy Church has become well-known on the folk music circuit for both her solo work and as a member of Quartette, with Sylvia Tyson. Church has received two Juno nominations and several Canadian Country Music Association nominations.
The Banff Centre’s winter/spring 2007 Playbill Series continues with African Guitar Summit (February 17), Jane Bunnett and the Spirits of Havana (February 18), Ailey II (February 23), and Mae Moore and Lester Quitzau (February 25).
Tickets for all Banff Centre events are available through The Banff Centre Box Office: 1-800-413-8368 or 403-762-6301.
