In 2004 when a group of musicians came together to record what has been hailed as the greatest recording to come out of the African music scene in Canada, the album, African Guitar Summit, won a Juno for World Music Album of the year in 2005 and charted in the top 20 of the World Music Charts Europe. A unique collaboration of the finest Canadian guitarists of African origin, African Guitar Summit has gone on to perform to sell-out audiences throughout Canada and has recently produced a second CD, African Guitar Summit II. Joined this year by special guests Ndidi Onukwulu and Madagascar Slim, African Guitar Summit will return to The Banff Centre’s Eric Harvie Theatre on Saturday, February 17.
As last year’s concert proved, a live performance by African Guitar Summit can have the whole house up and dancing. The unique collaboration has found a way to “create musical magic”, according to Toronto’s Now Magazine. Coming from distinct cultural backgrounds and languages, the musicians have bonded through stories, and songs. Combining the music of Guinea, Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, and Madagascar with blues, jazz, and rock influences, African Guitar Summit is a musical experience not to be missed.
African Guitar Summit unites the talents of nine expert musicians including, from Burundi/Rwanda the bluesy Mighty Popo; from Guinea, Juno Award winner Alpha Yaya Diallo; from Madagascar, the quicksilver guitars and harmonies of Donne Roberts; from Ghana, the elder master of the guitar Pa Joe; from Kenya, the fiesta guitar of Adam Solomon; from Guinea, Naby Camara on balafon; the fantastic beats of drummer Kofi Ackah; and the golden voice of Theo Boakye. This outstanding line-up will be joined by special guests Toronto-based blues singer-songwriter Ndidi Onukwulu and three-time Juno Award winner Madagascar Slim.
The Banff Centre’s winter/spring 2007 Playbill Series continues with Jane Bunnett and the Spirits of Havana (February 18), Ailey II (February 23), Mae Moore and Lester Quitzau (February 25), and Willie and Lobo (March 1).
